K18, a 126-residue peptide containing the four repeats of the tubulin-binding domain of tau is driven by phosphorylation to form liquid–liquid phase-separated (LLPS) droplets, a state from which full-length tau further condenses to form amyloid fibrils. K18, which like tau is strongly cationic, also can be seeded to form amyloid-like filaments by preformed tau amyloid and by complementary anionic polymers and compounds and accordingly has been used as a model for analyses of factors controlling amyloid assembly. |
